Having successfully painted my paternal grandparents, I decided to try painting my maternal grandmother, Ruby. This painting actually has two subjects: the one that can be seen and one that cannot. My grandfather, a keen amateur photographer, set up this picture himself. I’m told that the photograph was taken in Texas, shortly after my grandmother had given birth to her first child. The original photograph is black and white. I used AI to suggest appropriate colors and did some research into home décor of the time.
It’s not often that you can peek into how life really was in the past, with a more casual photo depicting the everyday. I loved the details in the retro kitchen. I decided to make the pie plate green: a cameo appearance by the real green Pyrex pie plate that I permanently borrowed from my mom.
